Yoga Sutra Study

Join me for a five month journey to unpack the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, a 2500-year-old text, in an accessible way.  Learn and understand foundations of yogic philosophy as described by Patanjali, and embark on a spiritual journey toward deeper understanding of yourself.

“If you are interested in learning more about yoga philosophy, then I highly recommend signing up for the Yoga Sutra Study program with Alex McRobert at the Mindful Life Practice! I have been a student in the yoga sutra study class throughout this year, and it has been a fantastic experience! Far too often, I think that western society teaches us that yoga mostly has to do with asana, or the physical postures of yoga. However, asana is only 1 of the eight limbs of yoga. In the sutra study class, we get to delve deeply into the true purpose of yoga. We also get to learn about the many practices of yoga that can be applied to our lives (not just asana), as well as the benefits of each of these practices. I definitely feel as though I have a much better understanding of the overarching purpose of yoga as a result of the Yoga Sutra Study program, as well as a lot more knowledge about how to apply yoga to my every day life. Another awesome benefit of this program is that I have gotten to meet other people from around the globe who share the same interest in yoga philosophy as me, and I have been able form friendships with my classmates in this program, as we are meeting and connecting each other once a week over a long span of time. If you are at all interested in learning about yoga philosophy, then this is the class for you! It is a fantastic experience!

I am an eternal student, so naturally I wanted to explore more about yoga philosophy. But, I found translations of the yoga sutras daunting and hard to understand. What I have loved most about Alex's Sutra Study Training is that she has been able to give modern day examples to explain each sutra in a way that makes them relatable and easy to understand. I think being able to dive even deeper into each sutra in a small group discussion has allowed me to gain a better understanding too. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who wants to learn more about the origin of yoga and deepen their practice.

Before joining this program, I had practiced yoga for years, but I never fully understood the deeper layers of the tradition. Alexandra has a gift for making ancient philosophy feel intimate, relevant, and alive. Every week, she weaves the sutras into real-life stories, recovery wisdom, meditation practices, and the challenges we face in modern life. It feels less like a lecture and more like being guided through a journey of self-discovery. What surprised me most is how practical the teachings became. Concepts like vairāgya, abhyāsa, the vṛttis, and the kleshas started showing up in my relationships, my habits, my healing, and even the way I speak to myself. I now understand yoga not just as movement, but as a path of mental clarity, resilience, and liberation. Alexandra holds such a safe, compassionate, and inspiring space. Her ability to link philosophy with sobriety, trauma recovery, and real human vulnerability is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in a yoga course. I felt seen, understood, and deeply supported. If you’re looking for a study experience that is intellectual, emotional, and spiritual all at once — this is it. I’ve never felt more connected to my practice, or to myself. This course didn’t just teach me the Yoga Sutras; it helped me live them. I would recommend it to anyone on a path of healing, growth, or wanting to deepen their yoga journey.

About Our Program
When I am travelling, I always like to attend yoga classes in local yoga studios. I find I meet amazing people, get a feel for the community, and get an opportunity to practice as a student. What I find around the world, however, is that in many places, the essence of yoga is being lost. What we are learning in the classes is the asanas - the poses of yoga - but not why we are doing them. What's missing is the philosophy of yoga.
Most of modern yoga is based on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras - an ancient text of 196 sutras, or threads, written thousands of years ago. The Yoga Sutras are a practical textbook to guide your spiritual journey of remembering who you really are. The Yoga Sutras are divided between four chapters, discussing the aims and practice of yoga, the development of yogic powers and finally, liberation. The Yoga Sutras warn you of the obstacles on your spiritual journey and offer the means to overcome them. I was keen to learn more about this when I first started yoga - but when I read the Yoga Sutras book assigned to me in my 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training back in 2014 - I just didn't understand what Patanjali meant by his passages. It has taken me over ten years of studying the Yoga Sutras to begin to understand them and apply them to my life. I want to share this knowledge and study with yoga teachers, and students of yoga who are passionate and want to learn more.
Is This For You?
This sutra study is for you if...

  • You feel called to understand yoga beyond the poses. You instinctively know there’s something deeper beneath asana, and you want to study yoga the way it was meant to be studied - through philosophy, meditation, and lived experience.
  • You’re navigating a transition, healing, or spiritual awakening, and you want ancient wisdom to anchor you as you rebuild. You crave a consistent spiritual practice.
  • You want structure, ritual, and accountability. You want your practice to mean something again.
  • You want to understand your mind. You’re curious about vṛttis, samskāras, habit loops, emotional triggers, and the actual mechanics of the mind according to Patanjali.
  • You want a teacher who blends philosophy with real life.  You want someone who speaks honestly about healing, sobriety, relationships, boundaries, and the messy human parts of practice, not just the theory.
  • You seek community. You’re tired of doing your spiritual journey alone. You want to study, meditate, discuss, and grow with people who “get it.”
  • You’re a yoga teacher wanting to deepen your offerings. You want to weave yoga philosophy into your classes, cueing, theming, and personal voice - without feeling like an imposter.
  • You want tools that actually help you live differently. Not just more information, but practices that shift your inner world: meditation, mantra, journaling, and reflective inquiry.
